Description:A newly developed automated data entry system for use with the Environmental Lead Proficiency Analytical Testing Program (ELPAT) was described. The new data entry system allowed for the transmission of information by computer modem rather than the traditionally used methods of mailing or faxing. Laboratories participating in the ELPAT program were sent a copy of the computer program needed for modem data transmission, instructions, and a security password. The automated data entry system allowed more rapid reporting of results enabling NIOSH to provide any necessary corrections prior to sending out the next round of samples. The computer program involved creating an output file containing the ELPAT results and uploading the file to NIOSH over a modem. Details of the data entry and uploading procedures were described. Additional improvements that were being developed for use with the automated data entry system included the ability of individual laboratories to download their proficiency ratings directly from the NIOSH and the use of a similar automated data entry system in the Proficiency Analytical Testing Program.
