Description:The time dependence of the Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) spectra due to the reaction of propanal (123386) and pentanal (110623) with 2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine and the reaction of pentanal with 2-(ethyl)piperidine were studied. The time resolved FT-IR/attenuated total reflectance attachment (ATR) spectra showed that an oxazolidine derivative was not formed in the initial reaction of the aldehydes with 2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine. Instead a stable hemiaminal intermediate was noted at the gas/solid interface. In solution this hemiaminal may undergo dehydration to produce an enamine product which is stable. Only after desorption of the intermediate from the sorbent and exposure of the mixture to ultrasound treatment was an oxazolidine formed. In an effort to understand more fully how the coated sorbent interacted with the analyte the contributions of the interplay of adsorption kinetics, reaction rates, and aldehyde volatility must be evaluated.
