Emerging participatory approaches to ergonomic interventions in the construction industry

• Description:
  Participatory approaches for performing ergonomic interventions in the construction industry were discussed. The Construction Occupational Health Project (COHP) was discussed as an example of using participatory approaches for ergonomic interventions in construction projects. The COHP was part of a national research program directed at better understanding the health and safety risks faced by US construction workers and to mitigate the risks. The project was established to take advantage of the research and intervention possibilities presented by the Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel (CA/T) construction project in the Boston area. The COHP involved collaboration with unions and contractors on the CA/T projects to conduct exposure assessments and to design approaches for ergonomic and industrial based approaches. The COHP approach was to involve all levels of the construction industry hierarchy, owners, designers, management companies, contractors and subcontractors, unions, and workers, in the process by forming them into advisory groups. Two intervention activities were in progress: an evaluation of intervention ideas by field researchers of the COHP team and members of the advisory groups and a comparison of safety systems of two different contractors.
