Description:A recommended approach to the recirculation of industrial exhaust air was presented. Guidelines were provided to help insure the safe design, installation, and operation of recirculating systems. Topics that were addressed included: general philosophy; issues of concern such as safety, economics, technical feasibility, and engineering feasibility; air cleaners; contaminant characterization; desired or allowed concentration levels of contaminants; surveillance and response strategies including automatic systems, manual systems, area systems, duct systems, contaminant specific systems, and nonspecific systems; and design techniques including overall perspective, typical models, breathing zone equations, cost functions, model application, and failure analysis. Qualitative guidelines included: an initial assessment of the feasibility of recirculation; identification of all contaminants in the exhaust; establishment of permissible levels of identified contaminants; identification of major modes of system failure; implementation of a failure response strategy; and development of a plan for equipment maintenance, periodic monitor calibration, and system testing.
