Description:The use of a Remote Sensing Fourier Transform Infrared (RSFITR) system for the detection and quantification of organic vapors along the beam was described. The RSFITR instrument consisted of an infrared source, a receiving telescope, a liquid nitrogen cooled mercury/cadmium/tellurium detector, and a computer. The system was used to measure air contaminants at three chemical production sites. The instrument was positioned in the workplace so the beam intersected the work area to be studied and charcoal tube samplers were placed at seven locations along the beam path. The charcoal tube samples were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). Methylene- chloride (75092) (MCD) was detected by GC in the first workplace studied while RSFITR detected methanol (67561) as well as MCD. Measurements were made over a 3 day period at different sites in the second workplace examined. A total of five compounds were detected at this site including one that had not been expected or included in the GC quantitative set. Acetone (67641) readings obtained by beam measurements were consistently lower than those obtained using the point measurements. The system was set up to detect methyl-bromide (74839) (MB) at the third worksite; however, no MB was detected by GC or RSFITR while four other compounds were detected by GC and eight were identified by RSFITR. The authors conclude that RSFITR is useful for monitoring gases and vapors in air. [Description provided by NIOSH]
