Interaction of noise and whole body vibration

  Whole body vibration is a common factor associated with environmental noise. Although it is unlikely that exposure to vibration alone leads to hearing loss, there are several studies suggesting that vibration can enhance the amount of hearing loss produced by noise. This study builds on previous work, and investigates the role of both frequency and acceleration in the interaction between noise and vibration. Four groups of chinchilla were exposed to one of four experimental conditions: (1) vibration alone (63-89 Hz at .1 and 19) for 6 hours per day for 10 days; (2) noise alone (octave band centered at 500 Hz) at 100 dB SPL for 6 hours per day for 20 days; (3) combination of (1) and (2); and (4) combination of 14-20 Hz at .1 and 19 and (2). The vibration caused essentially no hearing loss. The noise exposures initially produced 40-60 dB TTS across frequencies of .25 to 16 kHz, however, by the sixth day TTS had dropped to 20-40 dB. The combination of low frequency vibration and noise did not show any interaction, but there was a small but significant increase in both TTS and PTS when the high frequency vibration was added to the noise. When the acceleration was increased from .1g to 19 there was not a corresponding increase in TTS. [Description provided by NIOSH]
