• Description:
  NIOSH's Western Area Occupational Health Laboratory (WAOHL) is located in suburban Salt Lake City, on ground that slopes gently to the majesty of the Wasatch Mountains. WAOHL is far older than NIOSH, having been originally established in 1949 as the Salt Lake Field Station of the Division of Industrial Hygiene, Bureau of State Services, U.S. Public Health Service. All of this was under the Federal Security Agency, HEW's predecessor department. For years WAOHL was housed at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, but in the fall of 1968 moved to its present building, originally a supermarket, but now modified to provide suitable quarters. Since August of this year, the Western Area Lab has been headed by a new Chief, Robert L. Peterson. Mr. Peterson comes to NIOSH with extensive experience in industrial hygiene with the Atomic Energy Commission, the Aerojet-General Corporation, and the Air Force (see biographical sketch in August ADVISOR). Assisting Mr. Peterson is Administrative Officer Clayton Phelan, a WAOHL veteran of 12 years. [Description provided by NIOSH]
