Description:The effectiveness of tryptamine (TR) as a derivatizing reagent was evaluated in actual field trials. Impinger sampling with 1-(2- methoxyphenyl)piperazine (MOPIP) in toluene and solid sorbent sampling with a TR coated XAD-2 resin were compared with impinger sampling with TR in dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO). Constant flow personal sampling pumps were used to obtain air samples. Four different spray paint operations were evaluated, including the spray painting of a tractor, a munitions cart, and an aircraft engine in spray booths. Area samples and personal samples were collected in the area of overspray and breathing zone, respectively. Hexamethylene-diisocyanate (822060) (HDI) was not detected in any samples when analyzed using NIOSH Method 5522, whereas the amount of HDI was between 0.5 and 1.0 microgram per sample when analyzed using NIOSH Method 5521. The amount of HDI detected with MOPIP was similar to that detected with TR/DMSO. The levels of HDI desorbed from an XAD-2 resin ranged from 0.005 to 0.021mg/m3. HDI collected in TR/DMSO ranged from 0.014 to 0.083mg/m3. The average sampling efficiency of the TR coated XAD-2 resin was 50% of that obtained with TR/DMSO, which was attributed to HDI reacting with polyols and atmospheric moisture before reacting with the derivatizing agents. The authors conclude that HDI is collected more efficiently with an impinger filled with TR in DMSO instead of a sorbent tube. [Description provided by NIOSH]
