Description:This manual was developed to provide high school science teachers with a compact reference to the hazards encountered while performing experiments in the areas of chemistry, the earth sciences, biology and physics. A health and safety hazard code was used so that the teacher could, at a glance, determine the relative danger of an experiment. Information was provided on electrical hazards, burn hazards, radiation hazards, compressed gas tanks, and glassware hazards. The hazards associated with typical chemistry experiments, astronomy experiments, oceanography experiments, paleontology experiments, physical geology experiments, rock and mineral experiments, weather and climate experiments, biology experiments, physics experiments, and field trips were discussed. An abbreviated course was also provided in toxicology and selected safety topics that should be of value to teachers lacking a background in these areas. Prior to a laboratory session, potential hazardous material should be discussed with the students. [Description provided by NIOSH]
