Description:Experiments with rats exposed to titanium-dioxide (7440326) dust reveal that the onset of alveolar clearance is immediate in terms of minutes, overlapping in time with the rapid clearance of particles from the tracheobronchial tree. Two days after the onset of exposure the number of alveolar macrophages is significantly increased. In 88 days (half time), 50 percent of the initial lung burden is cleared. Multiple exposures may change the clearance rate. Clearance efficiency may improve by experimental means. Lung clearance of titanium-dioxide in animals subjected to preliminary exposure to sulfur-dioxide (7446095) is significantly depressed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
