Description:Migratory and resident red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) overwinter in the Central Valley of California, foraging and roosting in almond orchards. Application of organophosphate OP pesticides to orchards results in exposure to hawks; historical records document hawk mortality and birds exhibiting symptoms of OP poisoning. In this study, radiotelemetry pesticide use reports and geographical information system (GIS) mapping were used to analyze hawk home ranges. Foolwash, feather residues. and plasma cholinesterases (ChEs) were studied to monitor exposure. Persistence of pesticide residues in orchards was determined from footwash data that were correlated with pesticide application date. Probable routes of OP exposure included dermal absorption through feet and ingestion of residues from prey and preening. Linear multiple regressions indicated ChE depressions of captured hawks were best correlated with footwash residues of parathion and less correlated with diazinon, methidathion, and chlorpyrifos. This study was sponsored by the Almond Board of California. [Description provided by NIOSH]
