Perceptions of Physical Education College Students, Professionals and Undergraduate Program Coordinators Regarding Noise in Their Profession

  Purpose: To verify the perceptions of Physical Education college students, professionals and undergraduate program coordinators regarding noise in their profession. Methods: The study population was composed by 30 students, 30 professionals, and 5 undergraduate program coordinators in Physical Education from Universities from Santa Catarina, Brazil. Two questionnaires were developed, including questions that regarded noise exposure, its effects on health, the interaction between these aspects and their professional practice, current occupational conditions of both students and professionals, and contents relating noise and Physical Education provided in undergraduate curriculum. Results: Noise exposure at work was considered moderate by 60% of the students and loud by 60% of the professionals. Gymnastic class in fitness academies (26.6%) and Physical Education class in schools (18.3%) were considered the noisiest activity in their profession. Tinnitus (28.3%, annoyance (51.6%) and discomfort (43.3%) were the most frequent complaints among both students and professionals. According to 73.3% of the students, 82.5% of the professionals and 60% of the coordinators, undergraduate courses did not offer instruction about noise and its implications for auditory and vocal health. Conclusion: This study showed the perceptions that Physical Education students and professionals have regarding noise, their associated health complaints, and the lack of knowledge or use of preventive measures. Moreover, it indicated a lack of information about noise, its problematic and insertion in Physical Education in undergraduate programs, although the need for this information is recognized.
