Description:A prospective analysis of the potential risk associated with inhalation of grain dusts contaiminated with aflatoxins was conducted. The literature concerning the absorption and carcinogenic effects of benzo(a)pyrene (50328) when adsorbed onto respirable particles is reviewed. Similarities and differences between the absorption mechanisms of aflatoxins and benzo(a)pyrene, the metabolic capability of cultured human bronchus towards aflatoxins, and the irritant nature of respired organic dusts are considered. Potential modifying factors known to influence carcinogenic outcome are described. A lack of epidemiological studies of populations exposed to aflatoxins by inhalation is noted. The authors conclude that the health hazard for inhalation of grain dust contaminated with aflatoxins cannot be assessed adequately due to lack of data. [Description provided by NIOSH]
