• Description:
  Optical ultraviolet radiation (UVR) dosimetry needs are reviewed. Production and sources of UVR, whether natural or industrial or medical equipment, are explained. Hazards, specifically to skin and eyes, are detailed. Exposure guidelines and NIOSH criteria for limiting exposure are set forth. Difficulties associated with measuring UVR deriving from the nature of UVR itself, from environmental factors such as ozone, or from the current limitations of meters and the few commercially available dosimeters, which do not adhere to the published UVR action curve are noted. The author concludes that with equipment currently available it is extremely difficult to measure UVR with the precision necessary to ensure adherence to the published criteria document.
