Description:A proportionate mortality study of brain or other cancers in Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers (OCAW) in Texas was conducted. A proportionate mortality ratio (PMR) of deceased members of OCAW was made from OCAW record systems of 264 White union members who died after 1947. The PMR for all cancer was slightly elevated at 1.18 and a PMR of 7.88 was seen for skin cancer. Deaths due to skin, brain, liver and kidney cancer at one refinery and hematopoietic and lymphatic cancer at another refinery exceeded normal values. The authors conclude that the relative excess in melanoma deaths appears to represent an occupationally related health problem. [Description provided by NIOSH]
