Brain cancer among OCAW members in three Texas oil refineries.

  Brain cancer mortality among active and retired Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAW) members at three Texas refineries (SIC-2911) was reviewed. Data was obtained from OCAW headquarters and records of Union locals to encompass active and retired male members between 1943 and 1978, as well as all deaths that occured during 1979. Observed deaths from brain tumors were compared to expected numbers using the proportionate mortality ratio (PMR), proportionate cancer mortality ratio (PCMR) and the county proportionate cancer mortality ratio (CPCMR). PMR's for total cancer and circulatory disease were significantly higher among active than retired Union members. PMR and PCMR values were significantly greater for malignant brain tumor deaths at 2.28 and 1.83, respectively. The authors suggest there is an association between brain cancer risk and exposures in the oil refining industry. [Description provided by NIOSH]
