Description:The determination of halogenated organic compounds was studied using electrothermal vaporization into a helium (He) microwave induced plasma at atmospheric pressure. Dry He was routed through an electrothermal vaporizer and a microwave generator. Various concentrations of Tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate (126727) (Citex- BC-26) were placed into the system creating a cationic emission from the halogen. The emission was measured at about 478 nanometers for maximum detection of bromine (7726956) or chlorine (7782505). Citex BC-26 was detected linearly with a regression correlation coefficient of 0.993. The detection limit was about 8 nanograms of Citex BC-26 for either the bromine or chlorine emission lines. The chlorine showed evidence of self absorption and was not as selective as bromine. The authors conclude that this method provides a rapid and single method for determination of halogenated organic compounds. [Description provided by NIOSH]
