Description:A preliminary evaluation was made of the commercially available Harrick Rapid Scan Spectrometer (Model RSS-B) for the purpose of simultaneous multielement determinations. The evaluation was performed by coupling the spectrometer to a carbon cup vaporization assembly and microwave argon plasma system. Emission spectra of aqueous solutions of metal ions vaporized into the plasma were then recorded. Analytical graphs for bismuth (7440699), cadmium (7440439), manganese (7439965), and magnesium (7439954) prepared simultaneously were pictured. Two significant features of this spectrometer were noted which may be of importance when using it as a detector for simultaneous multielement emission spectrometry. The first was the wide optical range of 200 to 930 nanometers that can be scanned in a single sweep. The second was the large dynamic range of radiation detection by the photomultiplier tubes. This dynamic range was essential when there were intense background lines present in the selected window or when the intensity of one of the elements of interest was much greater than that of the remainder.
