Description:The median effective doses for respiratory inhibition (RD50) of 26 chemicals are reviewed and evaluated for establishing threshold limit values (TLV) in the workplace. The method of measuring the RD50 is described. RD50s and TLV time weighted averages (TWA) are listed for 26 chemicals including benzoquinone (106514) and styrene (100425), for which values had not previously been unpublished. Log graphs of TLV TWA were compared to 0.03 times the RD50 data. The author concludes that 0.03 RD50 is a useful predictor of sensory irritants that affect man, but does not predict metabolic activation or lung irritation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
