Description:Circulatory responses during static work were studied on male and female workers. Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and cardiac work were measured in two male and two female subjects who performed a grip strength test at 12.5 25, 50, and 75 percent of their maximum strength. All grip tests were performed until subjects reached exhaustion. A relationship between circulatory performance and the intensity and duration of static work was observed. At the onset of work, the average heart rate increased from 103 to 142 percent; the average mean arterial pressure increased from 111 to 138 percent; and the average cardiac work rate increased from 117 to 202 percent. Values of the circulatory variables increased as a function of work duration, and the rate at which the variables increased was a quadratic function of the work intensity.
