Description:Various cleaning and washing processes were evaluated for reducing the bacterial and endotoxin content of cotton fiber. Studies were made on the cotton after treatment and blending, prior to carding, and on the airborne dust when the cotton was carded. Washing alone had the same decontamination effects as combined washing and steaming. Washing at 82 degrees C was more effective than washing at 60 degrees C. Alkaline scour at 71 degrees C and steaming were better than only washing at 60 degrees C. The levels of gram negative microorganisms in airborne dusts and raw cotton decreased by about 1 log after precleaning; these microorganisms in airborne dusts decreased another log after washing, and another 2 logs in raw cotton after washing. An additional log decrease occurred after steaming and washing plus hot alkaline scour. Endotoxin levels dropped about 3 logs in raw cotton and about 1 to 1.5 logs in airborne dust after washing. The author concludes that precleaning, washing, steaming plus washing, and steaming plus hot alkaline scour produce significant decreases in the gram negative organism counts and the endotoxin content of the cotton and of the airborne dusts.
