Description:The effects of washing cotton prior to processing were evaluated. Washing decreased the amount of dust emitted from cotton processed in an experimental card room. Higher washing and rinsing temperatures were correlated with greater dust reduction. In 5 of 10 trials, the dust added to the background card room atmosphere while processing washed cotton was 0.05 milligrams per cubic meter or less. Washing reduced the rate at which cotton could be carded. Improvements in processability included keeping the cotton dry for carding, using a static eliminator at the doffer crush rolls, increasing the relative humidity of the room atmosphere, and using a wire bound feed roller rather than a fluted feed roll at the lickerin. Applying a finish to the washed cotton also improved processability. The authors note that mechanical precleaning removes a large amount of trash from the cotton and causes some increase in the invisible wastes. Although washing does not significantly reduce these wastes, the washed cottons that are processed at higher production rates emit essentially no dust into the card room.
