Description:Various categories of particulate monitoring devices are identified and criteria for successfully monitoring particulates in recirculated exhaust air are given in a paper presented at a symposium held October 6-7, 1977 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Gaseous monitoring is also discussed. The five primary measurement domains are: 1) outside (ambient) air; 2) inplant air; 3) stack (stationary source) emission; 4) automotive exhaust (mobile source) emission; and 5) ventilation ducts. The measured parameters included concentration range of pollutant, condition of effluent, movement of monitored air, particle size distribution, chemical composition, instrument sensing method and instrument design. Each category of instruments is evaluated against these criteria as part of a selection process for identifying optimum instrumentation. Instrumentation includes light scattering devices, opacity monitors, optical tape samplers, electrical methods, condensation nuclei counters, piezoelectric mass monitors, and beta attenuation mass monitors.
