Updating treatment of pesticide poisoning.

  The necessity of obtaining as complete a medical history before attempting treatment in cases of suspected pesticide poisoning is stressed. In the past, some incorrect diagnoses have been rendered when the examining physician, hearing of pesticide exposure in the patient, ceased to look further and simply assumed the exposure was responsible for the illness. When carefully scrutinized by thorough history, physical examination, adequate lab work, good differential diagnosis, and, if need be, therapeutic trials, many cases of suspected pesticide poisonings turn out to be entirely different in origin. In cases of occupational insurance claims, symptoms and signs of illness totally unrelated to the known modes of action of pesticides have been attributed to pesticide exposure.
