Description:A study in Vermont which indicated that 23 percent of the individuals dying after highway accidents were dying of survivable injuries, prompted a comprehensive systematic approach to the pre- hospital and hospital phases of emergency medical care. The approach used planning, organization, and ongoing evaluation, but the most important aspects was training. The pre-hospital phase involved coordination and communication links, and an emergency medical technician training program. The hospital phase involved the results of the training program, a survey of hospital facilities and staff, and a training program for emergency room nurses. Preliminary evidence shows a decrease in deaths from survivable injuries. (Contract No. 099-74-0098) [Description provided by NIOSH]
