  Today's food-producing-animals, pets and wildlife are compared to the coal miner's canary, which by its death by undetectable gases, warned the miner of the danger. Veterinarians, acting with other scientists, observing ill health in animals, can warn society of the danger to humans. Animals act as warnings of possible chemical pollutants and zoonoses, and the inspection of food of animal origin alerts the scientist to possible environmental deterioration. The effects of chemical pollutants, and medical developments can be modeled in animals. By improving the quality of life of animals, the quality of man's life is also improved.
