Description:Experiments were designed to determine the effects of cadmium (7440439) on zinc (7440666) metabolism in male rats. Zinc is necessary for growth; a one to one ratio of zinc to cadmium in the drinking water inhibits growth, but when the ratio is four to one growth is not affected. Skin disorders were observed in zinc deficient rats with or without cadmium. Body temperature control and copper (7440508) distribution were affected by zinc uptake. Cadmium altered the responses inversely in relation to zinc intake, and can be considered an antimetabolite of zinc, cadmium was localized in the liver and kidneys but not in the testes. There is very little storage of readily available zinc in the male rat. [Description provided by NIOSH]
