Description:Postexposure decay curves were obtained from volunteers exposed daily in a controlled environment chamber to various concentrations of trichloroethylene (79016) vapor, to develop postexposure trichloroethylene decay curves with which to estimate the magnitude of an industrial exposure. Alveolar breath samples were collected in glass pipettes and analyzed by gas chromatography. The results reveal that breath analysis can be used as a rapid method with which to estimate the magnitude of rapid trichloroethylene exposure. Breath samples collected 8 to 24 hours after exposure were accurate indicators of the time-weighed average vapor exposure experienced by the subject on the previous day.
