Description:Changes in respiratory mechanics and single-breath diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide are compared in cats during exposure to low concentrations of ozone. Data are given for mean time after onset of exposure to ozone before maximal increase in pulmonary resistance occurs; mean effect of atropine on pulmonary flow resistance; mean changes in dynamic compliance during ambient air breathing, exposure to ozone, and after atropine; and estimated ambient concentrations of ozone that would allow the gas to reach the upper trachea in intact animals. Results indicate that acute exposure to low concentrations of ozone affects the caliber of the airways more than either the transfer of carbon monoxide across the alveolar-capillary membrane or alveolar surface forces (in the absence of pulmonary edema). The structural changes in the lungs are found to be consistent with the functional changes. [Description provided by NIOSH]
