Description:Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy studies are made of the morphologic and ultrastructural changes occurring in the respiratory system of cats and rabbits exposed to low concentrations of ozone. Considerable desquamation is produced by ozone in airway lining cells, the degree of damage being proportional to the concentration (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 ppm for 3 to 4.5 hours). Ciliated cells sustain more damage than goblet cells, mucus secreting cells or cuboidal cells, and many ciliated cells are found free in the airway luminae, desquamation frequently exposing the underlying basal cells and the basement membrane of the lamina propria.
