Description:The effectiveness of agricultural cabs in protecting workers from pesticides and other air contaminants was evaluated at John Deere Manufacturing Co., Inc. The laboratory and field evaluation were performed on a John Deere 7000 series tractor cab equipped with a High Efficiency Particulate Air filter inside the fresh air filter housing. The cab was equipped with standard recirculation filters inside. The measurements taken indicated that the cab was more than 99% efficient at removing aerosols larger than 3.0 micrometers in diameter. Protection factors are greater than 100 for particles larger than 1.41 micrometers during field evaluations. During the laboratory evaluation protection factors were greater than 100 for particles larger than 0.75 micrometers. The cab provided a mean protection factor of 38 and 43 during laboratory and field evaluations, respectively, for aerosols smaller than 1.0 micrometer in diameter. Some leakage of small particles into the cab was suspected. The cab remained under positive pressure during both the evaluations at approximately 0.75 inches of water. Any leakage that may be occurring is likely coming around the seams used to hold the filters in place in the ventilation system.
