Walk-through survey report: control technology for mine assay laboratories at Skyline Laboratories, Inc., Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

  A study was made to document and evaluate effective technologies for the control of potential health hazards at the mine assay laboratory located at Skyline Laboratories, Inc. (SIC-8734), Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Skyline Laboratories received samples for assay from various mines. The laboratory employed 15 persons. Potential hazards included possible exposures to lead (7439921), crystalline silica (14808607), respirable dust, mercury (7439976) and arsenic (7440382). The laboratory used local exhaust ventilation and partial enclosures in the sample preparation, flux mixing, and fire assay areas. HEPA filtered half mask respirators were worn during hazardous tasks. Blood lead analysis was performed quarterly and a hearing conservation program was in place. Aluminum lined gloves, lab coats, aprons, safety glass and safety shoes were used by employees in the fire assay area. The areas with the greatest potential for exposures were the sample preparation area, litharge mixing area and fire assay area. The authors conclude that due to the apparent effectiveness of the control measures in place at this location, this laboratory would be suitable for an in depth evaluation.
