Walk-through survey report: control technology for metal reclamation industries at East Penn Manufacturing Company Inc., Lyon Station, Pennsylvania.

  A walk through survey was conducted at the East Penn Manufacturing Company (SIC-3341), Lyon Station, Pennsylvania to identify and evaluate potentially effective controls and work practices in the lead (7439921) reclamation industry. The facility was a secondary lead smelter which operated 7 days a week, and recycled about 20,000 batteries a day, primarily automobile batteries. The company employed automation, local exhaust ventilation, partial enclosures, and enclosed ventilation systems in the reverberatory furnace operations, blast furnace operations, and casting and refinery area to reduce employee exposure to lead. Filtered half mask respirators are worn in the production areas of the facility. Personal lead exposure data from June of 1992 to May of 1993 were averaged by department and ranged from 3 to 257 micrograms/cubic meter (microg/m3), with acid refinery working having the lowest and front end loader operators the highest averages. The arsenic (7440382) personal exposure time weighted averages ranged from 0.10 to 1.14microg/m3 in the industrial battery breaking area and ranged from nondetected to 6.16microg/m3 in the alloying/pots area.
