Description:A study was made to document and evaluate effective techniques for the control of lead (7439921) and arsenic (7440382) exposures at the Quemetco, Inc. (SIC-3341) facilities located in Indianapolis, Indiana where metal reclamation work was conducted. The company was a secondary lead smelter operating 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Approximately 30,000 lead batteries were recycled every day. The facility used local exhaust ventilation, partial enclosures, and enclosed ventilation systems in the reverberatory furnace operations, electric arc furnace operations, and casting and refinery area. HEPA filtered half mask and full face negative pressure respiratory and full face and PAPR positive pressure respirators were worn in production areas of the facility. Incentive bonus programs were in place at the site to reduce blood lead levels and promote good personal hygiene and work practices among the employees. The author concludes that workers throughout the production areas of the facility are potentially exposed to high concentrations of lead and arsenic.
