Walk-through survey report: control technology for metal reclamation industries at Sanders Lead Company Inc., Troy, Alabama.

  A walk through survey was conducted to evaluate control measures used to restrict or lower the exposure of workers to lead (7439921) dust at the Sanders Lead Company (SIC-3341) Troy, Alabama. The facility was a secondary lead smelter, operating 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The facility recycled 1,000 to 5,000 batteries a day. The company employed local exhaust ventilation, partial enclosures, and enclosed ventilation systems in the battery cutting area, blast furnace operations, and casting and alloy area. HEPA filtered half mask respirators were also worn in production areas. The battery cutting operation was completely automated and performed in a totally enclosed ventilation booth. Even with all the precautions in place, the blood lead levels in workers were elevated. The authors suggest that improvements in the housekeeping and hygiene programs may be needed. Workers in the welding and furnace operations had the highest 6 month blood lead levels. These workers should be targeted with additional educational material and better training. The authors conclude that this facility would be a suitable site for an in depth evaluation.
