In-depth survey report: characterization of metalworking mists during the evaluation of a commercial air cleaner at Sauer-Sundstrand Company, LaSalle, Illinois.

  As part of a study designed to implement control measures to limit occupational exposure to metalworking fluids, four personal breathing zone samples were collected and analyzed for total particulate exposure among workers at two machine operations at Sauer Sundstrand Company (SIC-3561), LaSalle, Illinois. Video cameras recorded the effect of specific tasks on exposure. All of the concentrations monitored were below 0.5mg/m3, indicating that these exposures were acceptable in terms of available criteria. Concentrations were higher at the end of the transfer lines. The video report indicated that 50% of the worker's exposure was caused by mist leaking from the nonventilated machining centers. Worker exposure was increased by compressed air blow off and standing in front of the enclosure to remove parts from the machining center. Very few of the metalworking machines at this site used ventilation to control the mist generated by the machining operations. The authors recommend that the transfer lines be enclosed and each enclosure be ventilated with a separate air handling system. This would cause the transfer lines to be placed in a separate building within the facility with doors to access the transfer line.
