  Agricultural injuries and illnesses were discussed from the viewpoint of a practicing physician. The Nurses' Project (NP) was under development to extend public health nursing into the agricultural/occupational arena. Each NP had three to five nurses assigned regionally. The nurses were all in state health departments, based in districts, counties, or quadrants of the state, depending on each state in which the NP functions. Each of these nurses was to become involved with the target communities, getting to know health care providers of all types, becoming active in the Extension Services, land grant universities, educational institutions, the Farm Bureaus, the Grange, or whatever was important to the farming community in their area. The NP will provide a public health infrastructure partly through surveillance and intervention. Case surveillance, through provider interaction, can help recognize problems not identified in the community. The NP can intervene through education in the schools, providing community presentations, working with the Extension Service, providing contacts in the academic community or referral sources, and dissemination and discussion of surveillance and research results.
