Surgeon General’s Conference on Agricultural Safety and Health: A Government Perspective I

  The three aspects of the government perspective for agriculture were discussed. These aspects were the challenge given, the response made to date, and ideas gleaned from the conference. The challenge was a legislated initiative created to promote surveillance, research, and interventions, in addition to a demographic challenge as younger people leave the farms for the older generations to operate. The Farm Family Health and Hazard Survey was designed to describe the health status of farm families and to recognize work related hazards of a chemical, physical or biological nature. Six cooperative agreements were awarded late in Fiscal Year 1990. Such cooperative agreements are an excellent way to build the type of infrastructure and continuing collaboration needed for years in this industry. Surveys were conducted of both diseases and injuries occurring among farm workers. Occupational histories must also examine the secondary occupational interests of injured personnel.
