Description:As part of a larger study on the hazards associated with exposure to styrene (100425), a survey was conducted at Glastic Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio to familiarize the investigators with reinforced plastic processes and ascertain the feasibility of conducting a retrospective cohort mortality study. The company manufactured glass reinforced polyester plastics used primarily for electrical insulation materials, and a polyester premix material for their own use and sale. The facility used three processes: laminant molding, contour molding, and pultrusion. All of the personal records have been maintained since the start of the company. Currently about 183 hourly employees were located at the site. Employment history and date of personnel actions were all available in the personnel records. The major difficulty with this worker population for an epidemiologic study was its extremely high turnover rate. In a brief sampling it appeared that 90 percent of the employees worked less than 6 months at the site. Many were employed only a few days, quitting with complaints of severe dermatitis and respiratory irritation. The authors recommend that visits to other facilities be made to be certain they had an adequate picture of the styrene industry.
