Description:An in depth study was conducted at the Viking Yacht Company (SIC- 3732), New Gretna, New Jersey. This firm manufactured a line of power boats and for this reason was included in the in depth study of processes during which employees may be exposed to styrene (100425) vapors. Boat hulls were laminated by six workers and one supervisor. Resin and fiberglass dust were released during the grinding and abrading operations performed before each lamination step. Sander operators wear particulate filter respirators. Lamination workers were provided with protective clothing. Those most exposed to styrene vapors were the seven hull laminators. Levels of styrene and acetone (67641) were determined in both personal and area air samplers. A modification has been made in the process at this facility with the inclusion of a resin transfer molding (RTM) operation which uses closed molds to fabricate small parts with very little escape of styrene vapor. One particular worker had the highest average styrene exposure, 22 parts per million (ppm), and also experienced the highest styrene peak samples, 114ppm and 137ppm. These data indicated the presence of a very effective control system for removing styrene vapors from the boat hulls. There did not appear to be any problem with acetone concentrations as the mean concentration detected for the four lamination workers while cleaning their tools after completing a lamination was 17ppm.
