  A visit was made to the Woodmar Facility of the Borg-Warner Chemicals Company, Washington, West Virginia for the purpose of evaluating various methods used at this site to protect workers from exposures to hazardous materials. This facility produced many products including acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene resins, methyl- methacrylate/butadiene/styrene resins, and other modifier and reinforcing resins used for processing of other polymers. Gases or vapors evolved within the reaction vessels were collected in the manifold and then drawn through a foam knockout tank in part of the monomer recovery system. A description was provided of the reactor and the hold tank agitator shaft seals. Personal protective equipment included rubber suits, rubber boots, rubber gloves, face shields, air line respirators, half mask organic cartridges, and rubber aprons. Several work practices were noted which help prevent exposure to acrylonitrile (107131) and other harmful chemicals. A training program geared specifically to hazards at this site was given to employees. They also received a physical examination yearly, and a risk management committee discussed various aspects of facility safety and gathered input to bring about necessary changes.
