Description:This guide attempts to provide employers with guidelines for developing effective respiratory protection programs for persons working in asbestos abatement of other activities where asbestos exposure exists. The guide includes a model respiratory protection program which meets the minimum requirements of Federal regulations and incorporates additional NIOSH and EPA recommendations. Detailed discussions of the types of respirators appropriate for asbestos abatement are included. Also included are a checklist to develop or evaluate a respiratory protection program and a section on breathing air systems. Information is included on the proper selection of respirators, testing the fit of the respirator, cleaning and disinfecting equipment, inspection and repair of breathing protective devices, and proper storage of respirators. Appendices provide additional information, including current Federal regulatory requirements, examples of NIOSH approval labels, NIOSH respirator user's notices, general safety considerations, heat stress considerations, breathing air systems, and the transcript of NIOSH testimony at a public hearing on occupational asbestos exposures from June 1984. This report is available from the EPA Publications office at (800) 490-9198.
