Description:A walkthrough survey of the Mobil Chemical Company (SIC-2869), olefins/aromatics facility, Beaumont, Texas was conducted in May, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the 1,3-butadiene (106990) monomer manufacturing process and the potential for occupational exposure. The facility manufactured 1,3- butadiene by the ethylene coproduct process. Production occurred in a closed system, tightly maintained for economic and fire safety reasons. The facility used a manual system for obtaining quality control systems. The procedure involved purging and venting sample bombs containing 1,3-butadiene directly to the atmosphere, which posed a significant exposure during the procedure. The company was in the process of switching over to a closed sampling system. Company supplied industrial hygiene data for 1983 showed 1,3- butadiene exposures ranging from 0.20 to 17.60 parts per million (ppm), average 3.5ppm. The workforce consisted of 350 fulltime and 100 to 150 contract employees. The company maintained records on all current and terminated employees. The author concludes that once the closed loop quality control sampling system is installed, the potential for exposure will be significantly reduced. He recommends continued monitoring for 1,3-butadiene exposure after installation of the new sampling system.
