Description:A walkthrough survey of Exxon Chemical Americas (SIC-2869), Baton Rouge, Louisiana was conducted in June, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the 1,3-butadiene (106990) monomer manufacturing process and the potential for occupational exposure. The facility manufactured 1,3-butadiene by the ethylene coproduct process. Production occurred in a closed system, tightly maintained for economic and fire safety reasons. Engineering controls consisted of tandem or single seals on all pumps. Company industrial hygiene sampling data showed time weighted average butadiene exposures below 5 parts per million (ppm) for all job categories except the tank car rack operators for whom the average exposure was 33ppm. Exposures seemed to occur during connecting and disconnecting hoses to tank cars, monitoring filling operations with a slip/tube gauge, and conducting quality control sampling. Quality control sampling on the process line was performed by collecting manual bomb samples. The author concludes that tank car rack operators are exposed to elevated concentrations of 1,3-butadiene. Process operators and laboratory technicians while collecting and analyzing quality control samples may also be exposed. He recommends installing a closed loop quality control sampling system and reducing exposures for tank car operators. [Description provided by NIOSH]
