Description:Breathing zone samples were analyzed for hydrazine (302012) and ammonia (7664417) at Olin Corporation Chemicals Group (SIC-2869), Lake Charles, Louisiana in February, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to measure occupational exposures to hydrazine during its production by the ketazine process as part of a NIOSH industrywide survey of exposure to hydrazine compounds. Ventilation measurements were also performed. Time weighted average (TWA) hydrazine concentrations ranged from less than 0.002 to 0.27 part per million (ppm). The maximum hydrazine concentration measured was 0.91ppm, which occurred during process stream sampling. The OSHA TWA standard for hydrazine is 1ppm. TWA concentrations of ammonia ranged from less than 0.05 to 0.64ppm. Peak exposures up to 2.9ppm were measured during process stream sampling. The OSHA TWA standard for ammonia is 50ppm. Face velocities at a laboratory hood in the control room building ranged from 85 to 167 feet per minute (fpm). The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists recommended minimum velocity of 100fpm. The author concludes that hydrazine and ammonia exposures at the facility are below OSHA standards. Exposures could be reduced further by enclosing the process stream sampling points, by using closed loop sampling systems. [Description provided by NIOSH]
