Description:A walk through survey of control technology for fermentation processes at Gist Brocades USA, Incorporated (SIC-2869), Kingston, Sought Carolina was conducted in February, 1984. The company produced the industrial enzymes alpha-amylase, amyl glucosidase, and protease. Engineering controls consisted of enclosure of the production process, and local exhaust ventilation of all bag dumping stations and blending and packaging operations. Employee contact with the production process was minimal except for equipment maintenance and manual broth sample extraction. A relatively clean occupational environment was maintained. The facility did not have a formal industrial hygiene program; however, employees, using the concept of quality groups, selected safety related projects and presented them to management for consideration. Two safety committees that dealt with safety and health issues were also active. The company was in the process of developing a committee to oversee all health hazard issues. The company gave preemployment physicals. Subsequent medical examinations were given by a South Carolina mobile health unit. Employees involved in operations at dumping stations were required to wear disposable dust respirators. The author concludes that the inplace control measures appear to minimize exposure to microorganisms, process chemical intermediates, and biological products. An indepth survey of the facility is recommended.
