Description:A walk through survey of control technology for manual transfer of chemical powders at Colgate Palmolive Company (SIC-2844, SIC-2841), Clarksville, Indiana was conducted in May, 1984. The survey was conducted to determine if the facility warranted an indepth study. The company manufactured toothpaste and laundry products. Raw materials were transplanted in bags to the batching area where they were weighed and automatically dumped into hoppers. Other materials were scooped from bags and dumped into the hoppers. Major ingredients used were: sodium-benzoate (532321), a monosodium fluorophosphate, carboxymethylcellulose (9000117), phosphates, and sodium-sulfate (7757826). Engineering controls consisted of local and general exhaust ventilation. The designs of the ventilation systems were based on the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' Ventilation Manual. Workers were encouraged to use good work practices. Health and safety education material were provided. Safety glasses and shoes, ear plugs, and respirators were provided on an as needed basis. Employees were given preemployment physicals and periodic hearing tests. The company performed periodic dust monitoring. The author concludes that the facility represents a general type of automated dry materials handling operation and does not have sufficiently unique manual batching controls to warrant an indepth study.
