Preliminary survey report: occupational hazard control options for chemical process unit operations, Monsanto Company, Pensacola, Florida.

  A preliminary survey was conducted at two Monsanto (SIC-2815) facilities, Pensacola, Florida in November 1983. The Industrial Chemicals Division which processed maleic-anhydride (108316) (MA) had begun operation the previous April. General air samples were analyzed for MA and engineering controls were inspected. Analysis of air samples showed that the OSHA standard of 0.25 parts per million was being met. Occupational exposure was controlled by using n-butane (106978) instead of benzene (71432) as feedstock, sealing up the facility to minimize emission sources, using customary and specially designed personal protective equipment, and automating the processing equipment. The author noted that the personnel at one facility were very cooperative, whereas personnel at the other facility disclosed very limited and generalized information concerning engineering controls, work practices, and monitoring; therefore, it was not possible to observe all work practices. The author concludes that the MA facility is a very impressive, highly automated, continuous outdoor production operation run by a very small number of skilled workers.
