Description:A walk through survey was conducted to assess control technology for hazardous wastes disposal operations at Celanese Chemical Company (SIC-2800), Clear Lake, Texas in February 1982. Air, aqueous, and polymeric waste streams were generated by an acrylate manufacturing process. Company officials reported that waste streams from the acrylate manufacturing operations presented odor rather than exposure problems, engineering controls consisted of pump house ventilation, and incineration of ventilation air and wastewater in a waste heat boiler. A stream of waste polymeric materials was burned in a small solids incinerator equipped with an afterburner. Aqueous wastes were disposed of by deep well injection. Ethyl-acrylate (140885) pumps had devices that recycled seal leaks to the suction of the pumps. Air monitoring was conducted for acetic-acid (64197), ethyl-acrylate, and butyl-acrylate (141322) at the acrylate manufacturing complex. Measured concentrations were below 1 part per million. Monitoring of deep well injection sites showed negligible concentrations of contaminants. The author concludes that occupational exposure hazards at the facility are insignificant. No further study of the engineering controls is recommended.
