Control technology assessment of hazardous waste disposal operations in chemicals manufacturing, walk-through survey report, Allied Chemical Corporation, Fibers and Plastics.

  A walk through survey was conducted to assess control technology of hazardous wastes operations at Allied Chemical Corporation (SIC- 2800), Baton Rouge, Louisiana in February 1982. Hazardous wastes generated by the facility were primarily chromium (7440473) (Cr) catalyst rejects, Cr containing sludge, and spent acids and alkalis used in the cleanup of process equipment. Cr catalyst rejects were mixed with water to form a paste. The paste was packed in steel drums, temporarily stored on site, and finally disposed of in a secure landfill off site. Chromates in the cooling tower blow down were converted by an electrochemical process into less hazardous trivalent chromium (16065831) which was precipitated as a sludge in one of two ponds. Waste oils, acids, and other chemicals were temporarily stored on site and eventually disposed of by outside contractors. Area sampling was performed for hexavalent chromium (18540299) in the rotoclone area. Measured concentrations were less than 0.001 milligram per cubic meter. The author concludes that hazards associated with wastes treated at the facility are relatively few. No further study of the processes is recommended.
